Pack for cool starts, warm afternoons, dust and rain on a northern Tanzania safari. A practical checklist for clothing, documents, camera gear and travel-health essentials.
Clothing for changing conditions
Safari days can start cool and become warm later, especially when your itinerary includes higher ground. Pack comfortable layers and check the forecast near departure. TANAPA recommends neutral-colored clothing, binoculars and sunscreen for Serengeti visitors.
- Lightweight shirts, including long sleeves for sun and insect protection.
- Comfortable long trousers and spare socks and underwear.
- A fleece or warm layer for early starts and evenings.
- A lightweight rain jacket, sun hat and sunglasses.
- Closed comfortable shoes; casual footwear for your accommodation.
Your day bag
- Binoculars, camera or phone, charging cable and spare battery.
- A reusable water bottle; confirm drinking-water arrangements with your team.
- Sunscreen, insect repellent and tissues.
- A small torch or headlamp and a protective bag for electronics.
- The medicines you need during the day, kept accessible rather than in checked luggage.
Health items and prescriptions
Carry prescription medicines in their original packaging with relevant documentation, and check any import restrictions. Ask a travel-health clinician about vaccines, malaria prevention and your full itinerary. Do not choose medicines from a packing article; individual advice matters. Keep emergency contacts and insurance details accessible offline.
Documents and luggage
- Passport, required visa approval or documents, flight confirmations and itinerary.
- Travel insurance and any required entry-insurance documentation.
- Copies stored securely apart from originals, including an offline copy.
- Payment arrangements confirmed with your accommodation and operator.
Confirm baggage size and weight with every flight and vehicle provider. Do not assume international-airline allowances also apply to a small internal aircraft. A bag you can manage comfortably is more useful than extra outfits you never wear.
If you are also climbing or visiting Zanzibar
Safari clothing does not replace high-altitude mountain equipment. Use our Kilimanjaro packing checklist for your climb. For Zanzibar, add beach items and clothing appropriate for towns and community visits, and check the entry and health preparation guide.
Before departure, ask Bundi’s Moshi team to check laundry, drinking water, charging and luggage arrangements on your particular itinerary.
